The Wire is home to some of the greatest characters television has ever seen. It takes time to develop many great characters that are round, deep, and destroy stereotypes. Of these characters, the most loved of them all, is Omar Little. Omar Little, played by Michael K Williams, is perhaps the greatest character ever seen on television.
Omar Little has been compared to Robin Hood by many for his actions on the streets of Baltimore. He robs drug dealers, the rich, and lives on the money he gains. Omar does not necessarily give to the poor, but he seems to represent them by opposing the drug dealers. Omar was originally only going to appear in the first season of The Wire, but after people began to love him and Simon realized how great of a character he was it was decided that he would stick around for a while.
Omar is such an amazing character for so many reasons. He is very deep and has many different attributes that make him great. First, he lives by a code. He believes every man has got to have a code and they must live by it. Omar only steals from the drug dealers and will only kill them too. This is because they are in the game. Anyone out of the game is off limits to Omar, which is why he gets so angry when Stringer Bell goes after his grandmother, on a Sunday no less. Omar lives by a strict code and he expects others to follow suit. Second, Omar is homosexual. This is important because it goes against so many stereotypes that people have. Omar is a stickup artist and the toughest, baddest, and most dangerous man on the streets. The fact that he is gay seems to have no bearing on his life on the streets. Omar is gay, but it does not matter. This contributes greatly to the depth of Omar's character. Finally, Omar loves Honey Nut Cheerios. This is another unexpected twist that makes Omar even more special. This simple fact makes it so much easier to connect with him than it does most characters. All of these characteristics make Omar one of the best and deepest characters in television. We feel as if we know him just from seeing him in a show for a few episodes.
So Omar is round, deep, and destroys stereotypes, but so do most of the exceptional characters of The Wire, what makes Omar the best character in the show? The answer is easy, Omar is simply awesome. He carries huge guns, whistles ominous tunes, makes the meanest drug dealers look like little boys, and even jumps out windows. Omar Little is intelligent, dangerous, and perhaps even kind. There has never been a character like Omar Little and unfortunately there probably never will be again.
